Vintage Postcards from Pictou County, Nova Scotia

GREEN HILL

The Green Hill Look Off appears to have been a very popular place at one time, with an observation tower and museum. Most of the cards shown below were likely printed for sale in the gift shop.

The look off park was operated by Clifford Rose until about 1959 when it was turned over to the Nova Scotia government. Was this is the same Clifford Rose who lived in New Glasgow, who wrote the book, Four Years with the Demon Rum in the 1920's, and was the local temperance inspector during the Prohibition years? If so he certainly was a busy man!

The title is self explanatory, other than for the fact that at the time of the Royal Visit, Edward was not yet king. The young Prince Edward, Prince of Wales, was in Nova Scotia for one week (July 30 to Aug 6, 1860) and visited Halifax, Windsor, Truro and Pictou.

Printed in Black & White with a white border, this card looks very similar to those that were being produced by the Photogelatine Engraving Co., Limited (PECO) at the time. Were knockoffs a problem even back in the 20's and 30's?

This card appears to have been part of a series produced by PECO probably in the 1920s. They were in business from 1910 to the late 1950s and were the primary producer of postcards printed using the gelatine method. As can be seen from the card above this one, their competitors may have tried to produce very similar looking cards, perhaps in an effort to duplicate PECO's success with this format, or perhaps it was vice versa?

There is a small printer's "glitch" in the lower left area of the card, where what appears to be a small bit of paper stuck to the card while it was going through the printing process. The bit is still stuck on there and feels raised. Card is in near mint condition.

From this angle the hill appears to have been high and quite steep. This view may have been been taken from a lower point on the hill.

Someone likely visited Green Hill Look Off and purchased this postcard, then wrote the date 7/28/32 on the back of the card.

For some reason this view looks more desolate than the earlier views.

This postcard was mailed to Mrs. Earla H, Williams, Broad Street, Pawtuxat, Rhode Island. There is a little note to the lower left of the address area that says corner Lockwood and Broad. The sender doesn't have much to say other than to state that they really had no intention of mailing a postcard but did it anyway. Rather bizarre.
